The Klyuchevskaya Sopka volcano: extinct or active, where is the map
Klyuchevskaya Sopka is one of the largest active volcanoes located in the Kamchatka region. To see the wonder of nature, the mountain attracts tourists from all over the world.
Klyuchevskaya Sopka on the map
For many years the eruption of this fiery giant had changed the surrounding area, creating a new landscape for miles. And now he is not extinct.
An active volcano can be found in the Eastern part of the Kamchatka Peninsula about 400 kilometers from the capital city, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatka, 60 km from the Bering Strait and the same distance from the village of Kozyrevsk – key places where constantly start excursions to the slumbering giant.
The route to Klyuchevskaya group of volcanoes is one of the most popular tourist destinations, loved by tourists.
Klyuchevskaya Sopka mountain, which is part of the volcano, included in the Pacific ring of Fire great length. It stretches from the Kamchatka Peninsula and continues up to mount Erebus in Antarctica. In this way face two tectonic plates – the Eurasian and the Pacific, this explains the seismic activity natural object.
In turn, Klyuchevskaya Sopka is part of the Kliuchevskoi mountain, on a slope which was formed this and other cones. The most famous of them:
- Sharp and Flat Tolbachik;
- Mountain tooth;
- Large and Small Udis;

The history of the formation and eruptions
Klyuchevskaya Sopka there are already about 7000 years is quite a young age for the volcano. At the time of inception it was a stratovolcano of the Central type, complicated by a large number of cinder cones on its slopes there were about 50 side craters. With each eruption, their quantity increased or changed their location on the surface appeared smaller. The result of the activity of the volcano had almost the perfect shape of a truncated cone.
The first mention of the activity of the volcano dates back to 1697 year, and a full description of this process occurred in 1737. In those days, Stepan Krashennikov – one of the participants of the second Kamchatka expedition had noted that the effects of the explosion and release of lava continued for about a week. During the eruption itself, the hill has turned into one big glowing rockand lava rushed with powerful noise down to the river.
The second is even more powerful eruption of the volcano occurred in 1966. In that period the hot lava glass descended into the valley of the river Cirgury, and then proceeded to the village of Keys, which made the local people are considerably frightened.
Since scientists say that the volcano is active every 5-7 years, but the constant steam, smoke and gases coming out of the vents suggests that the slow eruption is permanent.
In General, over the past 200 years, the process of a volcanic eruption happened about 200 times, and the greatest activity was marked in 1980. In January of that year in the mountain emerged crack a mile long, from which oozed red-hot lava and ashes were thrown out.
Presumably, the location of Kluchevskoy identified and its name. According to one version, a small distance from the village of Keys and Klyuchevka river gave its name to the volcano, and on the other – a large number of hot springs located in the area.
Klyuchevskaya Sopka is considered not only one of the most active volcanoes on the planet, it is also the highest volcano not only Russia, but also of Eurasia. Due to the numerous eruptions, as well as unprecedented activity, its altitude is constantly changing. Even now it is not entirely accurate, every year the size of the volcano increased from 15 to 100 meters.
After the last eruption 2013 height of Kluchevskoy was up from 4750 to 4850 meters, the crater diameter is 750 meters and its depth of almost 500 metres. Thus the width of the base of the volcano is15 kilometers. The growth of the volcano is due to the impinging of molten lava on the surface of the crater.
The activity of such a giant - a rather frightening sight. If you are a lover to tickle your nerves, you'll probably be interested in this article about the scariest places in the world.
In their activity Klyuchevskaya Sopka is superior to many other volcanoes comprising the Pacific ring of Fire. He is almost always active, and when the process of eruption, this action is accompanied by a small earthquake, strong explosion sounds and copious amounts of white smoke. This entire process can extend from weeks to months.
Excessive volcanic activity of Kluchevskoy due to the fact that this volcano in terms of age, quite young, and in its activity it is inferior to the Hawaiian Kilauea.
Although scientists say that the volcano is raging often, but only every 5 years, local residents say that at some point the volcano could spew ash and lava for months.
The most striking manifestations of activity occurred in different years:
- In 1938, the eruption of the volcano occurred about 12 months;
- In 1966, the eruption of the crater of Vogue (side cone) lasted 3 months;
- In 2004, the height of ash emissions amounted to 8 kilometers;
- In 2013, the ash emissions have occurred at the altitude of 10-12 km.
When the volcano is active, it becomes extremely dangerous for residents and for local and international airlines. Through the main crater at such moments thrown loose volcanic materials are emitted to a height of 10-15 km, and lava comes out through the side cones at some points reaches local communities.
Tourism in the area
Thanks to ongoing eruptions of the volcano, the streams of tourists who want to see this fire-breathing wonder of nature of Kamchatka, did not cease and only further grow with each passing year.
The ascent of the volcano
The first ascent to Kluchevskaya Sopka has occurred in 1788, when the group, which included naval officer Daniel Gauss and his two companions, climbed the mountain without any mountaineering skills. The next attempt happened in 140 years, but it failed, because the group of climbers avalanche.
Since then, the rise of the volcano has become one of the favorite leisure activities of tourists in Kamchatka.
Today, the tourists in the tour group and with due observance of safety can climb to the crater of the volcano. Without the support of the instructors even do not try to climb on their own – the hill claimed many lives experienced climbers, as their fault due to negligence or the fault of the volcano.
The ascent to the summit of the largest volcano in Russia starts from the side of the crater, Aphotic – where is the same name of the Supervisory volcanological station. The best time for such trips is considered to be September. This month's path through the forest, which is on the way from the village to the volcano, visitors will not be annoyed by mosquitoes and midges, and the surrounding nature will appreciate the autumn colors.
Why this mountain is considered sacred?
From Kluchevskaya Sopka from the indigenous population of Kamchatka is covered with many legends, and they consider it a sacred mountainlike mount Fuji in Japanese. People believe that when God created the world, in the place where now stands the volcano, were his hands.
According to another version, a volcano is a place where dwell the souls of the dead, so in the moments when it erupts lava, or simply smoke, the dead are drowning your Yurt bones of whales, produced in the fire sea under the volcano. For this reason, people who belong to peoples who lived here before the arrival of the first groups of explorers, don't rise to it.
High activity of the volcano and the ongoing eruption, accompanied by smoke and red flames give visitors a chance to become witness to a unique spectacle.
